They may carry proteins, lipids and fragments of genetic material. In cosmetic use, the term 'exosome treatment' does not describe one standardized product; products marketed under this heading may differ in source, production, purification and composition. An exosome is not a stem cell and should not be treated as synonymous with stem-cell therapy.

Research into skin- and hair-related uses is ongoing. Laboratory findings are not the same as clinically proven benefit in humans. Claims such as ‘completely renews cells,’ ‘reverses aging’ or ‘definitely regrows hair’ do not reflect the scientific uncertainty.

For which concerns may it be considered in cosmetic dermatology?

Products containing exosomes are being studied for possible effects on skin appearance, hydration, texture and the recovery experience after procedures. There are also studies involving the scalp. However, turning to this treatment alone before establishing the cause of hair loss may delay diagnosis of an underlying condition. The treatment goal, product characteristics and available evidence should be assessed together.

Why is product identity important?

Cell source, production conditions, purity, sterility, storage chain and content verification are basic questions in terms of security. The mention of "exosome" alone does not prove the content or clinical effect of the product. In the dermatological consultation, the legal status of the product, the purpose of treatment and known uncertainties should be discussed clearly. This page does not mean that a specific brand, product or protocol has been used.

How is the treatment planned?

Different approaches may be offered, including injection, use after microneedling or use alongside another procedure. They are not equivalent. Any method that crosses the skin barrier requires separate consideration of infection, irritation and ingredient-related reactions. Assessment should cover the skin condition, treatment goal, current medicines, previous reactions and relevant medical conditions. There is no fixed number of sessions or one treatment interval suitable for everyone.

Who may it not be suitable for?

Individual medical assessment is required when there is an active infection or open wound, a skin condition flaring in the treatment area, a known ingredient allergy, a significant immune disorder, bleeding risk, pregnancy or breastfeeding. A history of cancer, immune-modifying treatment or serious systemic disease must be disclosed to the physician. Suitability is not determined by age or skin type alone.

What can happen after the procedure?

Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising or dryness may occur, depending on how the treatment is delivered. Aftercare varies with the procedure’s effect on the skin barrier. Protect the area from irritation and intense sun exposure, avoid unapproved products and follow the individualized review plan. Seek medical assessment for increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever or an unexpected reaction.

How should expectations be set?

Goals such as skin quality may change gradually and are perceived differently by each person. Results relate to the baseline condition, product, technique and accompanying care. Evidence varies by indication, so outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
